With some some wonderful knit fabric from Fabric Mart, my favorite fabric store, I joined their sew along. If it hadn't been for an overflowing toilet and the resulting rain in my kitchen I would have finished on time but it still got done and I love how it turned out.

Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-75232710607829208362014-02-03T06:46:00.001-08:002014-02-03T10:38:58.914-08:00Modifying a prom dressIn today's stores all the prom dresses are pretty much too short, too low cut, too figure fitting and just plain tawdry. For girls that want to be modest for their prom, look stylish and still keep their dignity, you pretty much have to sew from scratch or modify the dress. In our church we have very strict modesty rules for dress. This girl came to me and asked me to modify her dress. She is pretty short so I cut off 3.5" of the hem, did a new rolled hem on the lining and the stretch chiffon and then pieced the old hem pieces together to form sleeves of a sort. As you can see from her darling smile, she is very pleased with how it turned out! It only took about 2 hours to cut and re-hem the dress, but then about 3 more or so, to turn those pieces into straps, and hand sew them on. There are several things in life I am pretty good on, but estimating time is NOT one of them. Even with client appointments, although I have been in public accounting for 15 years, I really have a difficult time estimating how long something will take. She offered to pay for the alterations, but I seriously have no idea how much is even fair, besides that it is a good service I can help offer, and that smile is payment enough!
I have done a tremendous amount of sewing, but I always struggle with sewing for myself. So, I had my daughter help me fit the muslin, pinning me in and out of it many, many times. I thought I came to a good sleeve and overall fit for the dress. Then, I made a few pieces new with the adjustments and basted the bodice together with a trial sleeve...it didn't fit well! It really deflated my enthusiasm, after I thought I had it. So, now, I need to measure the armscye and the sleeve to see how much ease really is there. I may have to modify a bodice side piece with a princess seam, but I won't know until I figure out the sleeve ease. It seemed with my first trial sleeve, it fit great, then when I re-made the sleeve out of one piece of muslin, it was kind of tight and pulled the shoulder piece, off my shoulder. Super frustrating.
It is a pretty busy time. I made those wonderful dresses for that cute missionary girl, but she had to come home early, after a week, due to health reasons. For I am truly sorry that the people of Carlsbad, CA will not get to hear her teach them the gospel in her darling southern accent, I am grateful she is back and has an open schedule so she can help watch my children so I can work. Everything works out in the end, as it is the Lord's plan, not ours.

Fabric Mart - my go to nowadays - has had a pretty good sale and some wonderful fabrics that I have purchased. They just showed up yesterday. There are some really dreamy linen fabrics. I also got on one of their daily specials, some nice herringbone woven blend in a creamy color that I am anxious to get my hands all over. I don't know quite yet what I will make, but as I sit here working on payroll tax reports, I am thinking of yummy herringbone and linen blend fabrics. :)

Ah, but the CRD0101 Herringbone is sold out...

I also just tried another online store and bought this amazing
Kauai Cotton Brocade
which came yesterday. The picture totally does not do it justice! I know exactly what I want to make out of it, provided I like the fit and style of the muslin that I will sew one day. It is a Burda pattern from December 2013. I can't find the link real quick, I will have to come back and add it.

What fabric are you dreaming of? while doing something else :)
Well she actually left, so I am going to have to mail it to her. The poly that I picked out for this skirt is super nice and silky, but thank heavens for my serger or else it is a terrible, hairy mess on the inside. I finished the outerskirt (now working on lining) a week ago, and I am still finding little fuzzy clusters on the floor, carpet and random pieces of clothing I have worn over the past couple weeks. I know that some suggest pinking shears and some suggest zig zag the edge of the fabric, but I just don't see how this can possibly rein this hairy mess all in, like the serger does. I have to say, I am grateful for my serger :) I hope to finish the skirt this weekend, as tax season is really starting to bear down on me and I have not yet done any of my clients W2s and their employees are getting impatient.

Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-69940400350742665162014-01-15T16:52:00.001-08:002014-02-03T10:41:37.035-08:00Making a dress by surpriseThe best thing about this dress is that she didn't know I was making it for her. She came over to try on what she thought was the floral dress I made her, but I blindfolded her and then once standing in front of a mirror, let her see what I had actually made! So, I uploaded the picture of her surprise!
Part of that, she is required to wear only skirts or dresses to represent the church in a respectful, reverent manner. So, I offered to make her a dress, her choice of pattern and her choice of fabric. She has a very pleasant figure, and being new to fitting, I thought it would be fairly simple. I made a muslin, and had her try it on. I thought it fit her nicely and took some pictures. Upon review of the pictures I realized I had missed some big fitting issues, I had not seen before. I ended up sewing 4 different bodice muslins till I got to a well fitting garment. I thought the hard part was over, however the fabric she chose was the most difficult. She picked yummy silk organza type fabric with chiffon florals on it. This required it to have an interlining, which was an italian, stretch silk, and then a cotton silk blend for the lining. Sewing the two layers together was quite a challenge to keep them behaving well together and not slip around. In addition the rolled hem on the chiffon was very difficult because it went from chiffon that folded over easily to the charmeuse that didn't. In the end the project turned out beautifully, I do wish I had matched the pattern at the invisible zipper.
I have tried to find ways to post pictures on the blog, but to no avail. All the while, finding that one of the "fixes" I tried completely disabled me from getting to the dashboard. So I reversed the attempted fix, and here we are again.Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-91859745230258403552014-01-10T07:32:00.000-08:002014-02-03T10:42:14.751-08:00Inspired by MoodSo, Mood Fabrics recently put out a post for a new blogger to join their group as a couple of them were unable to fulfill the commitments. With the new year, resolutions, the realization I am just happier when I sew, I thought I would love to be a Mood blogger someday. One of their preferences is that you are a consistent blogger and sewing all different types of garments with different types of fabric. So, this year I would like to resolve to sew each month, and post a blog entry about it. This is a very ambitious goal for me, given that it is January and the beginning of my very busiest time of year. I really like being a CPA, I love to help people with something that they just feel lost on and showing them that they, indeed, can do it. However, the down side is that you have to put your personal life on complete hold at least from February-April 15th each year, typically adding a couple weeks on the beginning and end of that time period depending on your practice. I hope to be able to fulfill this resolution, stop stressing so much about some other struggles in life and just enjoy the moments as they come.Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-57002867805257203442014-01-09T12:22:00.003-08:002014-01-15T16:54:56.936-08:00Catching up!So, I finally am getting around to updating my blog a little and I can't get my photos to upload. So, that is very frustrating. I can see that they are there, and when I choose to add them to the blog, it just sits there with a "dumb look" on its "face".

So, I will try some wording then later go back and add some pictures....

In June of 2013, I made four flower girl dresses for a wedding in France. Yes, it was as exciting as it sounds. It was wonderful. The girls were from 2-4 years old and all I had to make them was their chest measurements and height. They dresses turned out great and fit the girls just fine, which was quite a worry since I would not be able to change anything nor fit the dresses to them prior to the wedding. I used a wonderful champagne colored dupioni silk with scrolled embroidery on it. They had long skirts with a big bow at the waist and the bodice was a cross over. We almost didn't go to the wedding due to the cost of the travel, but as I was sitting there in the church waiting for my "daughter" to walk down the aisle, I couldn't think of another place in the entire world that I wanted to be than right there, right then. It was such a wonderful, happy feeling. Claudia and JB are such a wonderfully matched couple, and at that moment, I had such a strong realization how much we truly loved her as a daughter just as our other children. To be there for her wedding day, knowing it was important to her, was more priceless than I can describe.
Yes, I am a CPA; I work from home for my own firm. January through April I hibernate from nearly everyone, even my kids wonder where I have gone at times. They get very accustomed to seeing me sitting in my office working for hours and hours till late at night. However, by this point in the season, it seems every year, they all get really tired of Mom always working. I have really enjoyed my new sewing room that we built into the house and so, I am looking forward to getting to sew again. Fabric Mart sends out emails about their sale fabric; today they sent out an enticing one with duponi silk embroidered fabric for $14 per yard. I got so excited I bought enough of various colors to make a dress for me, and one for each of my 3 daughters. So, yes, YES I DID, I bought my after-tax-season fabric!
I ordered the light background with the blue flowers. I am going to do the waistband white as well as a hem band and a neck band. I think it will be wonderful.
Now I have to get the second bodice made for the muslin and tweak on that so I am ready for the underlining and fashion fabric. Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-80040099249864532152012-12-17T20:42:00.001-08:002012-12-17T20:42:16.154-08:00Fabric CHOSENWell, I have chosen my fabric for the couture dress I am making. I will be using the white background, with the blue circles for the skirt, bodice, and sleeves. Now, for the waistband I will use the white silk twill. Also, I am going to create a small facing around the neckline out of the white for modesty and a white hem 3" band or so to complete the white accents. I am so excited! Susan suggested to me to use cotton batiste for the underlining to make sure that you couldn't see through the white, and my local Mary Jo's Fabric store had it. Not cheap, but it is dreamy nice and I think it will go well with the silk twill.Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-67057363478140000872012-12-12T18:34:00.000-08:002012-12-12T18:34:10.564-08:00It's a polyester world! Well, in my search for some nice fabric for my wonerful dress, I have come to accept the very sad fact that my husband's grandmother was right when she told me, the quality of fabrics available now are terrible. Now, if you want to sew with polyester, then you are fine. I have sewn with a lot of polyester, but when sewing for my daughters, that is the best choice ultimately for the ease in caring for the fabric. As they slobber nutella all down the dress right before going to church, it wipes clean, then can be thrown in the washer and dryer after church with great results. Anyway, back to my point...everything is polyester just about. It is very difficult to find nice quality fabrics, unless you are in NYC or San Francisco, etc. Luckily there are some great stores in NYC that have reasonable websites and swatches easily available. But going into Joanne's and Hancock's (the main chain stores) you are surrounded with fleece and polyester. It really is sad. People are giving up on doing any real sewing, and I think that is why fleece is so predominate anymore. Hancock's is a huge store, but over half of the inventory is FLEECE ??!!? Stores stock what sells, right? The sales clerk at Hancock didn't even know silk organza existed when I asked her about it. There is a huge, independent fabric store not far from me, but it too has a very small selection of silks. It has a pretty good selection for wedding laces, and that will be super fun when my daughters get older, but for just nice, high end dresses, not very much. They too, have a lot of polyester, and a ton of cotton quilting fabric. Oh well, back to the online stores and getting swatches.

Above are the swatches that I ordered from Mood Fabric in NYC. I was originally thinking more of a traditional floral, but can't quite find anything I love, so I am settling in on loving this blue cirlce pattern. All the swatches are silk twill, and are lovely to hold in your hand. The silk charmeuse swatch had less body, still nice though, than I wanted. I want to do the waistband, a band around the hem, and a neckline facing from a solid color, while the rest of the dress is the patterned fabric. I think I like the lighter pattern, the one with the white background, but I am worried about shadows, etc, showing through the white background. Also I would use white to line it and white for the accent pieces mentioned above, waistband, etc. But I want them to appear solid white, not with any kind of shadow. I am underlining the dress with white silk organza. I have posted a question to Susan on my sewing class to see what she says about making sure the white stands out, so we will see. I hope she answers my question tomorrow.Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-59732909485188640222012-12-12T18:10:00.001-08:002012-12-12T18:10:11.928-08:00First Fitting

My husband did what he could, but he is a manufacturing engineer of metal, not fabric. After having Marie pin in the excess and trying out different things, we came to the conclusion to make another bodice from mulin in two sizes smaller. Much of the problems with the bodice originally made was that it was to large, and too full. The sleeve may have some other continuing problems, but all fitting instruction I have seen says that you should figure out the bodice first then the sleeves after that. Also, some extra fabric in the armsyce will be taken up with the sleeve. I am a seamstress by passion, but a CPA by trade. I actually did this fitting a month ago, but with 3 tax law seminars and Thanksgiving, I haven't yet sewing together the new bodice, but hope to soon. I am also well on my way to choosing my fashion fabric.

It is frustrating because the Vogue envelope stated I would fit a 16 (12 in the real world) but now the new bodice I am working on is a 14 in the pattern. So, we will see what works out better.

Yeah! I had been very reluctant to buy the fitting book Susan recommended but only because it is $91. However, I just gave in and got it. I will let you know how I like it when I find some time to flip through it.
Also from eBay I got my silk Belding Corticelli silk thread, yeah, that was really expensive too. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-6930228969244302922012-11-14T20:25:00.001-08:002012-11-14T20:25:13.501-08:00First fittingWell the first fitting has left me with a lot of questions with no answers. I am grateful for Susan's advice to pin it all down before cutting it out otherwise I would have run out of muslin. I thought I had plenty and expected to have extra, but that was not the case.
The sleeve was a little tricky. I combined the two sleeve pieces as Susan showed but to get the stitching lines to match the grain lines were not parallel on the two pieces. So I made sure the grain lines were parallel and did the best I could to get the stitching lines to match. I will see how it turns out when I see it together. I will also consider an elbow dart and sew the dart at the top of the shoulder. <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-55882181021066095622012-11-12T19:44:00.001-08:002012-11-12T19:50:23.498-08:00My body double and the beginningWell with the help of a friend I now have a duct tape dress form -my body double. I would love to be making this couture dress for my BFF but since she lives 2100 miles away I am making this for myself. It poses some challenges to fit yourself but a dress form will greatly help with that. I would like a Uniquely You form but the duct tape version was $170 less expensive. I would rather buy really nice fabric for my dress at this point.
The fabric store had a 50% off sale on notions so I also got tonight two more Olfa mats that perfectly fit my cutting table. As Susan Khalje would say that was a "gift from the sewing gods". I agree.
So now that I have my table ready and my body double with all my measurements I am ready to start to work with my pattern! I am making view F, but may make it long sleeve and do a complete lace overlay. I am sure the lace will be a huge challenge but I know Susan will help me along the way!<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-52493062595120581432012-11-12T12:59:00.001-08:002012-11-12T12:59:23.851-08:00There is a fabric SALE!Well, I suppose the retail industry likes to celebrate our vetrans by getting consumers to spend money. Kind of sad, really, but it is society as we know it. Remember please to thank those vetrans in your life today.
A chain fabric store is having a sale and so this evening I will be going and getting a couple more items needed to begin my couture sewing class. I have watched all the lessons through, hours of information! Now I am nearly ready to begin. With the help of a friend I made a duct tape dress form last weekend, tonight at the sale I am going to pick up some more muslin and get started. I also started to shop for fabric for the dress. Susan Khalje, my instructor, told me to cut off the scalloped edge of the lace overlay then re-attach it when I figure out the hem line. It took my breath away! How could you do that?
So through more instruction from her, and a lot of online research on Threads Magazine, I see that it is indeed possible. I am excited to see a beautiful garmet turned out from this process.Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-25763338499458089362012-11-12T12:34:00.004-08:002012-11-12T12:34:48.744-08:00Couture

Couture is such a loosely used word. I looked it up on Pinterest, and one picture showed a muscled older man without his shirt on?! That is NOT couture. Couture is a method of fine sewing - beautiful fabrics, construction, details, proper fit, etc... Couture should not be screen printed on the side leg of a pair of sweatpants available at a store in the mall. Couture should be respected and studied, for it is a form of art.
Through this online class given my a master couture dress maker, Susan Khalje, I have come to honor and respect this form of sewing. I aspire to make my garments with more care and detail just as she does. I hope to be able to finish a fine dress with the class and next year take her one week class in Baltimore to learn even more. All of my sewing for years is geared toward sewing wedding dresses for my 3 daughters someday, I hope to live up to the couture art form of dress making.Carl and Missyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03176090441433633097noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6675024647471028355.post-13136771714703254062012-10-24T16:21:00.001-07:002012-10-24T16:21:41.446-07:00That's what a sewing room should look likeSo I have been happily sewing in my wonderful new sewing room all day and my husband came home from work and said, "now that's what a sewing room is supposed to look like, right?" I couldn't agree more. I have included a preliminary picture of my daughters mermaid costume. I have to still sew down the lining and embellish it.
So, when I get my cricut up and running, I will put vinyl lettering on the wall, saying "Every day should be a party dress day"
